MaPnakotic 1.0 submitted!

MaPnakotic 1.0 has been submitted to the app store - I'm guessing this approval is going to be a bit complex (since you really need to download and run a MapTool server on a desktop or laptop machine networked to it).

Still, I've got some brand new screenshots, including a quick step through of some of the editing capabilities - making a quick little dim corridor with sleeping dragon behind the door: http://www.gandreas.com/iphone/mapnakotic/screenshots

I'll be the first to admit that this does not include support for all the features of MapTools - only about half the roll macro functions are supported, and there is no way to use your iOS device as a server that others can connect to (yet!). Not to mention that the UI is quite different, for obvious reasons, so everything is currently designed to be snap-to-grid (for example). On the other hand, it has support for a much nicer smooth gradient light casting, "halo" items are actually halos on the outline of the item (instead of just another colored square on the thing) and it can automatically turn your character when you move them (so you are facing forward based on your movement), and, of course, rolling virtual dice.

The "client only" version should be free, with in-app purchase for the virtual dice ($2) and local file/editor (don't remember off hand what that was priced at)

I'm looking forward to this and the add-ons. Hopefully I can figure out how to import the Battle Map maps into this client. It'll be ever so much fun to have the whole 5-ft. Player Character scale campaign creation process on the go from my iPod 3rd Gen (hopefully).

I've been lurking since I got your Dicenomicon program and am looking forward getting into the XML for the character sheets so I can get a Pathfinder variant up and going. Thanks for the update to the archive on that as well by the way.

Hopefully it gets approved soon. As a GM who uses maptools this is great news.. i'll be one step closer to only needing ipad when i gm.

Currently I run maptools server at home and my group connects from whoever's house we are playing at each fortnight (we have 1 interstate playing which require dus to use maptools in first place).

I currently run iOS4.2 beta 3 now and with multitasking can easily swap b/w goodreader (pdf) and gmtoolkit, so question i have is will MaPnakotic support multitasking and swapping b/w apps?

screenshots look great at the moment

I'm guessing this approval is going to be a bit complex (since you really need to download and run a MapTool server on a desktop or laptop machine networked to it).
Thinking about it...

How is that any different from a web-site client like the Twitter/Facebook/etc. breed of Apps? It is also like other bigger professional Apps such as DocumentstoGo or iTeleport(VNC) which benefit from full PC(Mac/Windows) hosted free services. And certainly no different from server Iockrd pieces of junk the FirstClass mail client. No different from needing MapTools. Just giving you ammo and examples.

Also once the internal on iOS hosting gets stable would there be any chance of also routing it through GameCenter? Both as a noice "I'm looking for players" and "I'm looking for a Game" pickup games? I honestly don't know how different game types would be identified but it in all likely hood make you (and MapTools) the first fully functional mobile virtual tabletop.

I'm not seeing the problem as one in principle, but one in practice. After all, while downloading the server and running it is fairly straight forward, figuring out how to use the server well enough to be able to test the app isn't the easiest (and given that the App Review team has almost certainly never even heard of MapTool before - unlike Twitter/Facebook/etc... - there's going to be problems just getting things up and running).

No current plans, but I'll certainly be looking into it eventually (since the current version doesn't support any sort of server mode - just client or optional stand-alone). Too bad, though, that there is no way to use GameCenter for any desktop app (much less a Java based one - hell, Java based MapTools doesn't even use Bonjour for local server discovery).

A little birdie (or perhaps some sort of leprechaun dressed up in a birdie suit - you never know with those guys) told me that MaPnakotic 1.0 will available from the App Store "real" "soon" "now".

I heard about this through the MT forum, I'm really curious about it. I was also wondering whether this would 'run' on an iPhone?

And working decently well. I'm more then happy to fork over the 5 USD of standalone (dot)campaign development and look forward to improvements. The dice add-on purchase will likely follow once I get more time with client. When I get the chance I'll try to but together any bugs I can find on my iPod Touch 3rd Gen iOS 4.1.

Looks like I need to get my server software updated first any. :D It still kind of works with 1.3b73.

Given what you've done with Dicenomicon I'm sure this will become the got Virtual Table client for the iOS.

Now I just need to get a MapTools gaming group together.

(Dorje's list of things to do: get Pathfinder Dicenomicon sheet variant working, test Skype voice conferencing backgrounding with MaPnakotic, get some quickplay battles writen-up. This is going to be much fun. Thank you for the Apps.)

MapNakotic bugs.

Hi,

Well I have spent the whole night tinkering with Maptools, my projector set up for my Face to Face 4thed game and a mate connecting via iPad from an external IP and I am impressed with the app. You have put in far more functionality than I thought you would/could.

However, since there will always be teathing problems with any release, I just wanted to give you some feedback.

1)Probably my biggest problem at the moment is that MapNakotic does not pick up all the graphics/objects that I usually put into a map or seem to show Fog of War

For example, Picture 1 below shows the map I ran last night, inclusive with lots of buildings and tokens with varying states. Essentially this is what my mini-projector images onto a table that the group has used up to this point.

http://img529.imageshack.us/f/mapnakotic1.jpg/

The following picture is from my friends iphone of his ipad connected via the cloud.

http://img263.imageshack.us/i/mapnakotic2.jpg/

The Pc's are there as well as the mobs combined with a red aura on one of the mobs but I am missing all of my buildings (effectively graphics under the object layer). These graphics are not a part of the packaged release of maptools bu was compiles by maptool users (I dont know if that matters or not). Also the Fog of War is not present. I thinkered with that lighting setting you had in MapNakotic but that didn't help.

The next picture is a close up of the cluster f(*k that the PC's created to gank my Deurgar Ambush.

http://img826.imageshack.us/i/mapnakotic3.jpg/

As we can see, something screwy is happening with my mobs as either a quarter or half a token has gone AWOL (the PC's have a purple circle whilst the Mobs are a red circle). Also the states on the tokens are not coming through, neither is the blue halo on one of the Mobs. Combined with this is their is partially a part of a building but the rest of it does not show.

2) My friend and I had a couple of app crashes. I cant attribute it to any one action but I would hesitate to call it "stable".

3) On a different map i had used some time ago, the mobs were unviewable even when in plain sight. Only when I moved them did they show via Mapnakotic but when I release the token, it goes invisible.

Seemingly their is something i am unaware of or wrong with tokens set to NPC's or graphics on the object layer as well as the states on tokens. I am using Maptools 75 (latest release) with Vista 32 on a BenQ S57 laptop. These problems are replicated exactly on my iphone connecting to maptools via an internal IP.

All in all, I am still extremely excited with what you have accomplished. I am happy to provide you the maptools campaign file or any other data you request if it will help.

Lastly, could you please describe the 2 in-app purchases that can be made in a little more details. I am a fan and user of diceonomicon and wonder what functionality of diceonomicon translates into the Mapnakotic dice roller, if any. Also if you could spell out the potential of the other "server" app please? does this allow a device using Mapnakotic to act asa server or something else entirely?

Thanks once again! You have made a giant leap forward in my view
