2.1 Features

Postby gandreas » Wed Jun 17, 2009 10:32 am

2.1 is going to be more than just a bunch of bug fixes, but I'm trying to avoid having super big releases like 2.0 was. Still, 2.1 is going to be good.
Completed:
- Significant UI enhancements (trust me, they are cool)
- A bunch of minor UI enhancements as well
- Improved usability tweaks (for example, the trash button is only enabled if there are actually dice on the board)
- Unification of clipboard with 3.0
- Customizable "dice bar" at the bottom of the screen (hint: see first item of first section)
- Translucent dice

In Progress:
- Reassignable parameters to different constants (aka "derived parameters")
- Parameters for macro targets ("3d6BRU#1")

And of course, various bug fixes (including the "open ended BRU die")

I'm also considering having a "The Dicenomicon Light", but not sure what features for it, and what price point...

Besides the ":next:" formula chaining capabilities discussed elsewhere, the final major feature for 2.1 has been implemented - the ability to use parameters as the number of sides of a die!

So you can now do "1d#1" (where #1 is a parameter to pick the number of sides)...

":next" sounds great! But... (wait for inevitable question)... when's it out? :)

I'm just finishing up the last minor features (being able to change the UI Theme "skin" mentioned above, including being able access new themes via the Dicetorium) which should be done today, and then there's a handful of bugs I need to fix before getting it to tester later this week.

The biggest problem, of course, is how long it will take to get approved - with the problems with the AppStore, at best it'll be two weeks, but last time was well over a month, so....

Here's a quick peek at the UI enhancements mentioned above (as well as showing off translucent dice):

The theme can be switched to other themes (both built in and downloaded via the Dicetorium), and these also show the new die bar at the bottom:
- It is customizable (and each "game room" gets its own dice)
- Scrolls (those two corner views drop out of the way while scrolling so you can see more of your list)
- Shows "live" previews of the current dice (so if you change the textures, it will be re-rendered with the new textures).
(Oh, and the careful eye will notice that the number of parameters you can specify for a formula has been increased to 6)

"in app" access to the gandreas software support web board has been added to the Dicenomicon - a real iPhone ui that is much nicer to use than constantly pinching, zooming, and panning in Mobile Safari...

This message was even posted with it!

It's looking very nice, can't wait 'til it's out!

I've been rolling with Dicenomicon in our D&D 4th game for a long time now, and it really works well. Playing a character attacking multiple foes each turn, it would be a so slow having to calculate every roll manually.

Will the next update have an Undo ability? It's really annoying when I hit the wrong key and the formula editor rearranges everything in it's attempt to decipher what I'm trying to do.

It's better than that. Besides an undo (which is certainly handy), it is also much smarter about how to handle invalid formulas. It tries its best to make sure that the formula is always valid - while writing a formula, this is nice. While editing a formula, it will often cancel whatever it was that you just did. This behavior has been toned back (making the need for undo much less - you can still screw thing up, so the undo is great for fixing that, but there will be far fewer times when it screws things up for you).
